What does it mean to be a host family in the Netherlands, and what families can apply as host families? To take an au-pair into your family you must prove to have sufficient income to be able to support yourself as well as the au-pair. As long as you’re a family with one child under the age of 18 you can apply as a host family. It is important for the au-pair to have her own private room which consists of a bed and wardrobe. It is not compulsory but preferred that the room also has a TV and/or computer for the au-pair to use, remember, your au-pair should be treated as a member of the family.
